A Warm Welcome

Welcome

An evening of recognition, heritage and community

It is my honour to welcome you to a celebration of the quiet architects of belonging — the people who build bridges where others see borders.

Behind every African family that has found its footing in the United Kingdom, there is a bridge builder. A mentor who opened a door. A neighbour who offered a seat at the table. An advocate who turned a strange city into a place called home. Tonight, we gather to honour them.

The Bridge Builder Awards exist to make the invisible visible — to give name and recognition to the acts of generosity, leadership and cultural stewardship that have helped thousands settle, integrate and thrive far from where they were born.

This evening also marks a milestone close to our hearts: the official launch of “The Bridge to the United Kingdom” by Jesse I. Alozie — a book that captures the journeys, the obstacles and the triumphs of a generation finding its place between two homes.

To our honourees, our distinguished guests, our partners and our community: thank you for being here. May tonight be a reflection of how far we have come, and an inspiration for the bridges still to be built.

The Bridge to the United Kingdom

by Jesse I. Alozie

“The Bridge to the United Kingdom” is the no-nonsense manual no one hands you at the airport. Written for newcomers from the streets of Lagos to the tech hubs of Bangalore to the markets of Manila, it helps readers stop just “getting by” — working through the ego hit of a survival job, decoding British indirectness, and navigating money and family duty back home.

Through real stories of people who crossed before them, the book maps the practical ground no one else covers: staying on the right side of UK law, building a life and a future here, and using heritage as a superpower rather than a setback. It is a call to cross the bridge with your head held high.

Closing Remarks

Until We Build Again

Thank you for standing with us this evening — the bridges we honour tonight were built by hands that asked for nothing in return, and the greatest tribute we can offer is to keep building.
